Cards of Darkness
My team decided to be an Olive Branch because we thought it
would be smarter to establish peace because we would have a better chance of
getting resources. We figured that if we went in with our “guns blazing” we
were create a lot of hostility and we would not be able to build a healthy,
friendly relationship with the natives. Since the expedition was going to be
twelve months we decided it would be best to begin with as clean a slate as
possible. When the game began we decided to press for resources just in case we
pulled a bad card and were forced to sacrifice a resource. We felt that it
would be safer to be ahead and have more resources than we needed because we
knew that there would be months where there would be hostility and we would be
forced to sacrifice resources. After pressing our force for a few months we
stopped because we knew that there was a lot of hostility in the
goodwill/relations deck and we were sure that our luck would run out soon
enough. I regret pressing for resources the first couple of months because it
would have made the second part of our year better. If I could try it again I
would begin with my “guns blazing” because out of the whole class only one
group decided to begin forcefully and they ended the game with the most
resources.
This was a reasonably realistic portrayal
of the colonial times because we were forced to make the same decisions as they
had to make. One thing that I think was a bit unrealistic was how forgiving the
natives were after we were forceful with them. In a real life situation it is
not that easy to get someone to trust you after miss treating them. This
experience gave me a greater insight on what European colonist had to face
because it forced me to think about the outcome of real life situations.
